WeSC loves ECO
We have designed the first collection in ECO acetate for our brand WeSC Eyewear and we are very proud of it.
TIMING
OPO Scandinavia has a variety of brands, all of which are designed in-house. We have discussed the use of Eco acetate in our products for some time now, but since the supply is still limited, if you compare with the supply of "regular" acetate from, for example, well-known Mazzuccelli, we have waited. We work a lot with both patterns and colors in our various brands and ECO acetate so far only comes in natural colors. But, to WeSC Eyewear which is aimed at a young, conscious target group who like to wear frames in neutral colors, ECO acetate fits perfectly.
WHAT IS ECO ACETATE?
All acetate is made of cotton cellulose mixed with dyes and substances that make it a mass. When producing ECO acetate, you use environmentally certified cotton and additives that are degradable in nature, under the right conditions. The oil used in all plastics, as a plasticizer, is usually fossil. But in Eco acetate, over 60% of the oil is bio-based and thus has fewer negative effects on the environment.
PHTHALATES
All plastics use phthalates, synthetic substances which also make the material soft and supple. Phthalates are not bound to the material but "leak" out and can be absorbed by, for example, your body or the surrounding environment. All use of phthalates in spectacle materials is strictly regulated by the EU because it is a product you wear on the skin. Eco acetate has taken it a step further and both reduced the phthalates and used phthalates that are biodegradable.
CHALLENGE
The challenge with Eco acetate is to make something that is sustainable from an environmental point of view but also sustainable as a product, it should of course be usable for many years.
A plastic bag in "ordinary" plastic takes between 10 and 100 years to break down. During the process, it becomes small particles, known as microplastics, which go out into nature and cause damage. It is also created from fossil oils that emit carbon dioxide during combustion. Bioplastics that are composted in the right way, decompose without creating microplastics and in as short a time as 150 days. So there are several positive sides to Eco Acetate if you just find the right area of use.
